Lace Drain Plates
Lace Drain Plates
The stoneware Lace Drain Plates combines in one plate the symbolic, decorative, and functional relationships between lace, drains, and plates. First, there is the juxtaposition of the functional property of the plate (which is to contain) and the drain (which is, well, to drain). Then the decorative similarity between lace and drains become strangely and starkly evident. Finally, the symbolism of the three combine to mirror the decorative and functional properties: the refinement and decadence from lace, consumption from plate, and waste from the drains. The result of the juxtapositions, similarities, and mirroring of the characteristics of the three elements is an object which can function as an elaborately baroque food colander.
